Nessuno tocchi Caino

Yesterday marked a milestone in human history. With a large majority (104 votes in favour, 54 against, 25 abstentions) the United Nations General Assembly voted for a worldwide moratorium on executions.

Problem is that some countries deemed this as an outrageous attempt to sabotage the sovereignty of their state. I am profoundly disgusted. Nonetheless a moratorium is certainly better that nothing and it might constitute the first step towards abolition.

…one can always hope…

  1. The executioner’s face may be always well-hidden … but he has no shortage of justifications. The sovereignty of the state? Nobler ones have been offered, but this will do quite as well any other.
